I'll be frank: for the most part, the metal scene in the U.S. has been shit since the mid 90's. There have been some grassroots ("indie if you will") attempts in the late 00's to revive the older scenes of yore such as the New Wave of Thrash Metal (often branded "re-thrash" by it's detractors), and movements to import the creative explosions of early-90's Scandinavian bands into the modern age with record labels like Profound Lore and Southern Lord. For the most part however, the mainstream metal scene in America has been either characterized by the offensively thuggish and stupid Nu-Metal bands whose only opportunity of seeing the light of day at all nowadays is due to the mercy of mentally deficient "Alternative" radio DJ's; and more noticeably, the dominance of the "Metalcore" outfits being whored out by Hot Topic and Warped Tour. The latter of these two is the primary cancer of the American metal scene, but they both have done more than their part to move the metal scene in the States away from it's roots.

That all being said, I suppose the point of this thread is to share metal bands of the independent and preferably non-american persuasion.

Seeing as how we have a real live foreigner on these boards (SCARY GERMAN IS SCARY 0.0), I'll kick things off with oldschool thrash metal courtesy of 1/3 of the "Teutonic Three", DESTRUCTION

I like Blind Guardian (Germany) and I also like Savage Circus who come from Germany and Scandinavia. I guess this is what is called speed metal.

Yeah Blind Guardian would be one of my favorite metal bands, but I guess if your looking for new metalish bands I would say Burden Me is pretty good. I guess theyre more hardcore but theyre not bad, I saw them live twice and they put on a great show. Theyre music is solid and their breakdowns are pretty grotty.

Would you guys consider Skin Yard metal? or would they be more grunge

Yeah, Skinyard would definitely fall more into the "Grunge" label than anything resembling metal. The two genres have mutual influences of course, but different artistic attitudes and approaches to the creative process.
